Gran Canaria is in the Canary Islands and is the only island which is round in shape, rather than long and stretched. It is sandwiched between Tenerife to the west and Fuerteventura to the east. The mountainous north part of the island has many old volcanos and offers spectacular scenery.
The airport is at Las Palmas in the north east of the island, close to the old city of Las Palmas, requiring a 45 minutes’ drive down to the sunnier south part of the island, where the weather is infinitely better, at resorts like Maspalomas.
There is a golf course in the north west of the island at Bandama, which is a beautiful course in a big volcanic valley, with outstanding views down to the ocean, whilst El Cortijo Golf lies on the east coast south of Las Palmas. The remaining golf courses are all located down at Maspalomas and the surrounding area. The Salobre, Anfi Tauro and Meloneras courses are exceptional.
The beaches in Gran Canary are beautiful especially in the south and the climate is great year round, whilst it is noteworthy that the island is the best overall for golf courses in the Canaries, just surpassing Tenerife.
Island Golf Holidays recommend just 3 airlines to Las Palmas, this includes British Airways, Easyjet and Jet2.com. There are flights from Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Southend, Luton, Manchester, Newcastle, Liverpool, Leeds/Bradford, Bournemouth, Birmingham, East Midlands, Bristol and from Scotland & Ireland… Belfast, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Inverness.
There are other flights with companies like Monarch, Thomas Cook and Thomson.
