SICILY

DONNAFUGATA GOLF RESORT & SPA

five-gold-stars

RESORT OVERVIEW

The Donnafugata Resort is in the south east of Sicily, in a very historic and privileged region of the island, close to several UNESCO World Heritage sites, which includes the lovely old towns of Ragusa, Modica and Scicli. Nearby to the resort, which lies 4 km from the ocean, is the wonderful old Medieval Palace of Donnafugata Castle – which is well worth a visit. The resort lies just 20 minutes from the small Comisa airport and just over 1 hour from Catania airport.

Donnafugata is a classic Italian Resort with lots of character, style and ambience. It has a wonderful entrance and courtyard, very prestigious architecture and lots of space, extensive gardens, pool areas, clubhouse and hotel buildings, all within one impressive estate.

The highlights of the hotel, are the two dramatic and contrasting types of golf course, the Parkland course designed by Gary Player and the Links, which is the polar opposite, but equally impressive. The bedrooms are refined and you can either choose ground floor rooms, with patio in sumptuous garden areas, or smaller balconies on the first level, which have lovely countryside and golf course views. The Spa at Donnafugata is good – it is not especially large, but is well designed and a great place to relax and unwind after a game.

The sun terraces and pool areas close to the clubhouse have wonderful vistas across the golf courses and beyond to mountains.

Directors Tip – book on bed & breakfast basis, dine a few nights in house, but explore some of the old towns in the evenings like Ragusa, where you will find some lovely restaurants. Ask with the guest relation’s team in the hotel lobby about local excursions, including to Mount Etna. Sicily is a lovely island to explore.

Il Carrubo fine dining a la carte Sicilian venue, Surf n Turf next to the clubhouse on the terrace, 19th Hole lunchtime clubhouse restaurant, Il Ficodindia breakfast restaurant, Beddamia pizzeria on the terrace, close to the pool and clubhouse. 36 Holes of golf, Driving Range, Clubhouse, Wine Bar, Pool Bar, Lobby Bar, Sunset Bar, Night Bar. Beach Club & shuttle June to September, Outdoor pools & sun terraces, Kids Club summer, Spa.

The Spa is 900 square metres, so relatively small, but offering some good treatments, especially for golfers, the Spa has lots of natural light, with super vistas across the golf courses & countryside, Indoor Pool, Sauna, Two steam baths, Hydro massage pool.

There are 7 categories of room here, namely superior, deluxe and premium options. However, if you are looking for more space, rather than a different location, you must upgrade to a Garden Suite, which are 77 square metres. All the other rooms are 38 square metres, but significantly the rooms with patio, have much bigger outdoor areas to sunbathe (22 square metre patios), compared to the rooms with balcony on the first floor. The rooms with balcony, however have better vistas!

All rooms have Free WI-FI, Satellite TV, Mini-Bar, Kettle, Bath and walk in shower separate, Hair-dryer, Balcony or Patio with table and chairs.

The Links course and the Parkland course are both tough challenges at 6,500 metres off the back tees (6,000 off the normal tees). Both are equally challenging, although one must mention that it was the Parkland course which hosted the European Tour in 2011, designed by Gary Player – it is a classic parkland.

Notably, both courses have water, perhaps a little more on the Parkland than the Links. There are elevation changes on both designs, but perhaps more on the Links, which has the very best views – you can even see the ocean! The greens on the Links are very different to the Parkland and the course has more pot bunkers to give it that links feel, also the fairways are more generous and the run off the greens are more severe.

The Parkland is tighter off the tee, has more fairway bunkers and the greenside bunkers are closer into the greens. There is no doubt that the Parkland is more difficult especially off the tee and the rough is deeper for the erratic golfer, more lost balls await.

The beauty of the golf is just how different both golf courses are and they contrast so well! There are some excellent practice facilities at Donnafugata, following big improvements in 2016.

As far as Donnafugata is concerned- for someone who doesn’t want to travel far it is a great resort. We only tried one restaurant but the food was fine. The staff were great and the rooms were a great size and the bars managed to keep us going as far as alcohol was concerned. What more could a bunch of guys on a golf trip want?!The courses were pretty good too!If you ask me would we go back there again I have to say probably not but that is only because we like to get out in the evenings otherwise we go a bit stir crazy and both times we went out was both an hour round trip. The fact that we are coming back to you to ask you about next year will give you some sense of our thoughts on your service. I thought it was excellent and the speed at which you moved when you realised there was a problem at Verdura was superb.Tony

Thanks Tony - I am delighted that Donnafugata was a success - it was a big shame that Verdura had this flooding problem at the last moment, could have been a complete disaster, reopens on 01 March now in 2019!

We had a wonderful week at Donnafugata. I will do a trip advisor review when I get a chance.
Flights were great, transfer was too. Hotel facilities were lovely. The views from our rooms weren't as good as the inward facing resort rooms and we should have gone for the ground floor option to get the (significantly bigger) patio area. That said, the rooms were of a size that were better than most hotels with lots of storage space and very generously sized bathrooms. The staff throughout the hotel were lovely - very friendly.
The quality of the hotel restaurants was excellent. I wish we had gone half board as we did eat out twice (at Scoglitti and Punta Secca) but the cost of taxis for quite short distances was prohibitive. We particularly liked the Surf and Turf restaurant.
Breakfast was great with lots of choice. Pool area lovely. Not sure what it would be like at highest season - it was lovely and quiet when we were there.
The golf was great too. Pretty stretching for me but Andy and the boys thought the quality was very high. Also having 2 courses which were quite different gave great variety. The only criticism of the golf was that the greens were very very slow - they clearly have different grass there!
In short, we would definitely go back there - a great holiday was had by all.
Many thanks again
Elaine
