The post Pandemic period has seen some wonderful changes at this stunning golf and beach resort on the west coast of Tenerife. The owners have reinvested heavily on the entire Estate and brought it up to the best standards we have seen for 20 years. The relaunch of the Ritz Carlton Abama will be completed by mid-July 2023. The new look Abama involves a complete renovation and redecoration, restyling of all the bedrooms, not just the 315 units in the Main Citadel, but also the 144 rooms and suites in the garden areas. These more exclusive units are called the Villa Club, laid out in 7 rows with direct access to lovely pool areas exclusively for the use of customers staying in each particular avenue. This includes the adult-only section also.

There have also been some exciting additions and improvements to the existing restaurants on the Estate.

Unlike many of our resort partners around the Globe, the Ritz-Carlton Abama is a resort for every month of the year, you cannot categorically say that there is one month when you can expect bad weather, rain, wind or cool temperatures, it is simply the most ideal climate and in the low season period from May to September when the prices are at their most attractive, the weather is in fact even drier and hotter! If I was to pick out one great month to travel to this region of Tenerife, I would recommend the month of October, closely followed by November and December.

I know that post Pandemic from late 2020 through to mid 2021 the service levels at the Ritz -Carlton Abama were not good, this was caused by the fact that the resort lost so many of their long-standing staff who left hospitality and found other careers on the Island or overseas, as Covid 19 took its toll on morale. It took until mid 2022 to get the staff up to the high levels we had been used to pre-Pandemic and build a new team again, almost from scratch.

The Ritz-Carlton Abama benefits from a microclimate and boasts the most consistently hot and dry weather on the island of Tenerife, which one can say is on average across the whole year circa 22 degrees, idyllic for sure. Also, one can conclude that it is never really too hot either, the lovely sea breezes coming up off the Atlantic make it always bearable.

The golf course at Abama sits high above the hotel and the main part of the Estate, the Clubhouse is too far away to walk to, because it is up a very steep hill from the hotel lobby.

Designed by the renowned Dave Thomas there is no doubt that this is the no 1 golf design in Tenerife, buggy is always included in the green fee and we would always recommend our customers take advantage of the 5 round golf pass, which is the best value way of playing, basically 4 rounds is often the same price as 5.

The Villa Club area of the resort is a very popular and integral part of the Ritz – Carlton Estate at Abama, offering a wide array of VIP privileges, it is a resort within a resort, set in the lovely chilled out garden areas located well below the Main Citadel and just above the El Mirador restaurant and cliff top, which lead down to the beautiful beach.

Enjoy breakfasts al fresco at the exclusive El Mirador restaurant, for me a major attraction to staying in this part of the Resort. Enjoy being poolside just below your room and being offered free drinks and snacks all through the day. Enjoy the cocktail hour with other guests down close to El Mirador complimentary every evening and watch the sunset and make use of the Villa Club exclusive lounge down at El Mirador enjoying fabulous drinks and tapas & snacks in the comfort of this unique facility.

Verde Mar is a gorgeous new restaurant, where vegetables come first, everything in this restaurant is produced in Tenerife, including all the wines, fish, meat and vegetables, the venue has lovely inside and outside terracing, with a marvellous ambience. There are some wonderful vegetarian dishes to explore which one can say are unique.

MB Two Star Michelin restaurant has had a major facelift in the last 12 months – a complete renovation with cool designer style interiors to match the avant garde cuisine, which is exceptional. Also, you can now dine al fresco and not only inside, which is a lovely development to enjoy.

The Asian Fusion Kabuki restaurant is a splendid one-star Michelin restaurant and like MB offers some tantalising 8 course tasting menus.

There are many rooms to consider at the Ritz-Carlton, Abama for your ideal holiday. The Main Citadel has a majority of the rooms and because you are so much higher up in this Moorish style Terracotta building, the panoramic views from the balconies are unsurpassed. Whether they offer side sea view, full ocean view, or garden view. The worse view you may get would be inland with superb vistas into the interior of the Island and the dramatic Mount Teide.

If you wish to be close to the majority of the restaurants definitely stay in the Main Citadel, but if you like the Villa Club concept area down in the tropical gardens away from the madding crowds, then pick a villa double room, or a suite in one of the 7 exclusive avenues.

Again, you can always choose between a garden view, or an ocean view vista, at a premium. What we would advise in this area of the resort is that the ground floor garden rooms although less expensive, do give you direct pool access from your patio. Whilst the ocean view room, or suite offer a balcony with nice vistas, but you have no direct access from your balcony to the pool.

No doubt that the balconies of the deluxe ocean view doubles, or the one-bedroom suites in the Main Citadel have the very best wide-ranging sea view panoramas. The reality also is that the rooms in the Main Citadel are less expensive than the Villa Club options.

Some of the normal deluxe sea view rooms do offer the golfer superb views of the Abama Golf course and you are located right down alongside 2 of the fairways very close to the Main Citadel, holes 10 and 11 which get in close proximity to the sea at the lowest point of the golf course.

There are in fact nine restaurants on the Resort, something basically for everyone. Whether your budget is big, or not so big, you can enjoy some fantastic dining venues, not just with the chance to sample exquisite cuisine, but also to enjoy wonderful outlooks and ambience.

There is cuisine from all over the world to explore, including the new Verde Mar which offers simple and very healthy cuisine from the Island of Tenerife. The fish restaurant at El Mirador is probably the most perfect spot set on top of the cliff as close to the ocean as you can get. Eating down here is as good as it gets. The two Michelin star restaurants are obviously eye catching and offer the ultimate culinary journeys, they are also very expensive, but offer the diner an exclusive 8-10 course tasting menu with, or without paired wines.

What we would recommend is definitely treating yourself to one Michelin Star dinner during your stay, it is a unique opportunity to enjoy some sensational dishes, whether they are the Asian Kabuki restaurant, or the incredible MB restaurant. Kabuki is set up at the golf clubhouse.

The Verona and Txoko are two of the old favourite restaurants now and probably the most popular as they are well priced and both offer very tasty and generous dishes. Txoko has a nice outlook from the al fresco terrace across the pool and beyond to the golf course, 11th tee!

Half board is highly recommended to book in advance from £48 per person per night, it does save you a substantial amount compared to dining a la carte only in resort.
