Sicily is situated off the south coast of the heel of the Italian mainland and is the largest island in the Mediterranean. The island is relatively untouched and very quiet and undeveloped, compared to large swathes of the mainland.
The island is served by two main airports, notably Catania to the east and Palermo to the west, but they are nearly 4 hour’s drive, apart. Our featured resort Donnafugata in the south east, is served by Catania airport which is about a 90 minute drive and Comiso just 20 minute’s away accessible via Ryanair.com. The Verdura Resort is served by Palermo airport, which is less than 90 minute’s transfer away.
On the eastern side of Sicily is the famous Mount Etna, which dominates all views when you are driving through the middle of the island. Sicily has some fascinating wines created on the slopes of Mount Etna, where the vines catch some interesting flavours from the volcanic slopes, there is a unique and distinct flavour and odour to the wines!
The ancient city of Palermo to the north west, is well worth a day visiting, if you are staying at Verdura. It is an extraordinary place to explore on foot, lots of old cobbled streets and historic buildings. The ancient temples at Agrigento are also stunning, close to the east of Verdura.
If you are based at Donnafugata, we would recommend visits to Gela, Syracuse and especially Ragusa, or Taormina, which are stunning old towns with oodles of history and great views. From Donnafugata, you can dine out in Ragusa and from Verdura you can dine out in the lovely old seaside town and harbour of Sciacca.
There are in total 6 golf courses in Sicily – one of which is in the foothills of Verdura, but there are four worth playing, all equally special – 36 holes at both our featured resorts.
We would recommend spending 5 nights at both hotels and playing all 4 courses. A final mention of the Sicilian cuisine – it is unique and very enjoyable.
Palermo is served by British Airways from London Gatwick and Easyjet also, whilst Catania is served by Easyjet from Manchester, Luton, Gatwick and Bristol. Ryanair also offer a service from London Stansted. The flight time to Sicily is over 3 hours. Our overall recommendations are Easyjet and British Airways.
