This remarkable course opened in the Spring of 2023 and has already been voted the best new course in the world in 2023, as well as best new European course in the same year. It has also now been ranked as the 9^th best golf course in Continental Europe in 2024, which is remarkable in its second year since its inauguration.

The Dunas Course is also regarded as the second-best course in the Iberian Peninsula, which is an impressive accolade. The golf club are building a second course, which is being designed by Sergio Garcia and is opening in Spring 2026, this will make it an impressive 36-hole complex, arguably it will be the best in Europe.

The Dunas course was designed by the legendary David Mclay Kidd who designs remarkable golf courses, already responsible for some of the exceptional links at Bandon Dunes in Michigan and the wild links at Machrihanish Dunes. His golf designs are always exceptionally exhilarating tests of golf and he has built courses in places as far afield as Hawaii and Costa Rica.

The Dunas Course is located in the Alentejo Region, which is about 90 minutes south of Lisbon and below the beautiful wild Troia peninsula. Many of you may have played golf at Troia Links, well The Dunas is like Troia on steroids, that is how I have been described this unique new course. The design of the golf course is just the ultimate wilderness, with holes threading their way through sand hills, which are populated with towering pines trees. The holes are all totally unique and separated from all other 17 holes, – off fairway you will find wild sandy waste areas, now described as sand scrapes, which is very much the fashion these days in quality eye catching golf course designs. At this point in time there is no Real Estate on the course, and this may be the case for a while, so this is indeed the best time to experience The Dunas Course at Terres Da Comporta. It really is a wonderful new addition to European Golf.

THE OCTANT SANTIAGO

Our featured hotel to stay at in this region is the new and delightful boutique property, The Octant Santiago, which is just 33 minutes’ drive from the Dunas Golf Course, Terras de Comporta, located southeast of the golf complex.

The hotel is situated in the beautiful small hill-top historical pueblo style village of Santiago, the hotel has a wonderful location and a very fine reputation for good service and gastronomy, the hotel is a 4-star property, but with eye catching designs, bedrooms and public areas. The hotel was built in 1945 under the name of (Pousada de Santiago), after being closed for a few years, the building was restored and a new project initiated in 2008 with further advanced renovations in 2017 when the DHM Group bought the property.

There is no doubt that this hotel has a special charm and is very different to any other hotel we have featured. Ideal for a 5–7-night stay to allow you enough time to discover the beautiful scenery, culinary delights and the special culture of the Alentejo Region.

Local attractions and highlights included the Santiago do Cacem Castle, the roman ruins of Mirobriga and other historical monuments, the Santo Andre Lagoon and the Bodoca Safari Park. Plus, there are plenty of stunning wild Atlantic Coast beaches within 15-30 minute’s drive away. Not forgetting the exceptional new golf course, described above.

The Octant Santiago is located on the west coast of Portugal just 95 minutes south west of Lisbon airport, the best base to play the exceptional golf course (Dunas) which is relatively new to the UK market.

The hotel is within 10 minute’s walk only from the heart of this lovely historical town, a holiday here is for the discerning golfer seeking the best golf course challenge and who enjoys the cultural aspects of a holiday in a very quiet and special area of Portugal.

We would recommend hiring a car just so you can do a little more exploring during your stay, there is a lot to discover in the region, for sure.
