Welcome to Langkawi Malaysia

Langkawi is a stunning tropical island located off the north-west of the Malaysian coast and less than 1 hour from Kuala Lumpur and about 30 minutes’ flight north of the island of Penang.

Unlike Penang Langkawi is a peaceful haven of an island and has many protected areas which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, such as the Datai nestled in the beautiful north west of the Island. The Datai is the most scenic part of the entire island, whose mass is covered by impressive mountains in the middle and wonderful ancient Rain Forests which sweep down to the ocean. The Datai has a wonderful outlook to the north, from where you can see other islands including parts of the south of Thailand.

The Datai is one of the world’s finest luxury holiday venues and is one of a handful which are located in the midst of a natural Rain Forest environment. The award-winning beach at the Datai is just 10 minutes’ walk below the main part of the hotel and is ranked as the World’s 8th best beach of the world by National Geographic Magazine. The wild habitat of the Rain Forest means that during your stay you can see some of the rarest species on the planet – none more special than the Duskey Eyed Monkeys. A holiday here is special because of the natural environment and the chance to share it with such rare bird and mammals, as well as enjoying the best of service imaginable and the stunning Rain Forest golf course designed by Ernie Els – the Els Tulek course which is as exhilarating design as you can find anywhere!

Malaysia and Langkawi specifically offer the visitor the ultimate one stop holiday – however we would recommend combining a stay here with Singapore, or the Desaru Coast and or the stunning Island of Bintan in Indonesia.

There are no direct flights to Langkawi from the UK – it is a small domestic airport with an old-school charm. However, as we go to press, Qatar Airways are launching flights direct from Qatar, so you could access the destination from the UK via London Heathrow, or Manchester, in two equal hops of about 7 hours! What we would tend to recommend however is a stopover in Singapore for a few nights, followed by a week stay at The Sanchaya Hotel on Bintan Island and then a direct flight from Singapore to Langkawi for another stay on a Paradise Island! There are direct flights with Air Asia from Singapore, or you can fly with Malaysian Airlines via Kuala Lumpur. Finally, for those customers who prefer flying straight to Langkawi you can fly British Airways or Malaysian Airlines direct into Kuala Lumpur and then onward to Langkawi.

Malaysia is 7 hours ahead of GMT London and the flying time to KL from London is circa 13 hours, the onward flight to Langkawi is only 45 minutes! Another option is to fly with Emirates Airline from several UK airports like Glasgow and Manchester via Dubai to Kuala Lumpur or Singapore, just to break up the journey into two 7 hour segments.

The weather in Langkawi is unique, especially at the Datai, which is nestled in the north-west corner of the Island in a Rain Forest environment –the Datai  has a wonderful and unique micro climate, sheltered from the Monsoon type weather more prevalent to the south. The very best weather is from Xmas up to Easter when there is less humidity and the bluest of skies for longer periods of the day perhaps than other periods of the year. When it rains, it will rain hard at any time of the year but then it clears quickly. Warm rain can be very refreshing at any time of the year. This is a very tropical climate here at Langkawi. The temperature will rarely be below 30 degrees at any time of the season.

The local currency in Malaysia is the Ringgit and there are circa 5 Ringgit – £1 UK. We would recommend taking Ringgit with you on holiday for tipping purposes, failing that US Dollars are always very welcome to local workers and can go a long way for them.
