The Datai Langkawi

five-gold-stars

THE DATAI LANGKAWI

This is one of the world’s finest venues, an exceptional resort located in a unique and exhilarating environment. Following its closure from 2017-2018 for a major renovation programme, The Datai is back to its very best.

The resort is located on the magical and tranquil island of Langkawi off the north west coast of Malaysia, less than 1 hour from the capital Kuala Lumpur and only 90 minutes flight from Singapore.

This is a unique holiday venue where you can combine great golf, with the height of luxury and great service, within a unique ancient Rain Forest environment but with an award-winning beach at the bottom of the resort. The resort offers 3 very different types of accommodation according to location, from The Canopy Collection overlooking the rain forest, Rainforest Villas and Beach Villas, some of which have private pools.

The cuisine and service at the Datai excel and you can rest assured that you will be looked after so well during your stay. There is a French fusion, Thai, authentic Malaysian as well as a  seafood & fresh fish barbecue restaurant close to the beach.

The resort can offer the most perfect beach holiday, but this can be combined with enjoying the full on nature experience and taking advantage of daily nature walks with resident naturalists and marine biologists at dawn and at dusk so that you can learn about the unique birdlife and wildlife and vegetation that makes up the Rain Forest which surrounds the property all the way down to the ocean. One highlight mammal species is the Duskey Leaf monkeys who frequent the Datai and can be seen on room balconies, poolside and beachside, they are friendly and well behaved and gorgeous.

For the avid golfer we would point out that the Els Tuluk Datai course just less than 10 minutes transfer away is one of the very best golf courses in Asia and a unique design combining Rain Forest and Ocean Side holes, so beautiful and so mysterious as a design.

When moving around this big resort you can take the beautiful Butterfly Walk carved through the jungle, which must be the finest path walkway of any resort in the world leading down to the Beach and the Spa and Beach Club. However, the staff will run anyone down to the Beach Club or back up to the main Canopy in a resort buggy via one of several buggy paths which run through the jungle!

Breakfast at the Datai is a major highlight, the attention to detail and quality of the produce means that you can be enjoying this start to the day for well over 1 hour. Enjoy omelettes with lobster and lovely Birscher Muesli. Much of what is produced is grown locally.

The Datai peak season period is Christmas and New Year and then for the period January to March when the weather is at its very best and there is less humidity.

There are plenty of excellent offers, including 7 nights for the price of 5 nights and early booking discounts of 10%.

For the best possible offer please send us your requested dates. You will always need to book early as this is a small resort in terms of rooms and boasts a repeat client ratio of 65% year round.

The Datai has 4 restaurants ranging from French Fusion, Thai, authentic and traditional Malaysian and a fish/ seafood barbecue venue beach-side. The Nature Centre is home to the team of resident naturalists and marine biologists offering a unique environment where guests can enjoy nature activities and take part in very enlightening rain forest walks. There is a superb Beach Club and also Pool adjacent to the Beach area near the Beach Villas, in addition to the Canopy Pool at the very top of the Resort below the breakfast restaurant. The Datai has a splendid Spa with five open air spa villas secluded within the rainforest, where guests can take Ramuan treatments, with a new pedicure and manicure studio recently added.

The Resort has a stunning golf course and much more besides.

At The Datai you can enjoy 3 types of accommodation, in the main building above the Jungle Canopy in the deluxe canopy doubles, or the deluxe canopy premium doubles, which have by far the best view. There are sumptuous one-bedroom rainforest villas, which are spread throughout the jungle on the way to the beach,  with lovely outside decking, oodles of space and some with private pools and outside terracing, next to a winding stream looking out over the rain forest, offering total solitude.  The third option is the stunning one bedroom beach villas, the highlight accommodation, beautifully appointed with lovely outside areas with a pool and terracing and gardens which open up on to the award winning sand Datai Bay. These villas come with a private butler, full complimentary mini bar and luxury airport transfers.

For those customer who enjoy more space but prefer being close to the lobby and main restaurants and breakfast etc, we would recommend the Canopy one bedroom suites, they are beautifully appointed, spacious with great views.

The Els Tulek Rain Forest course is an absolute gem, one of Asia’s top 10 golf courses. Renovated between 2017-2018 it is now re-established as an amazing championship course and unrivalled in terms of location. There is no other course on the planet that is designed inside a Rain Forest environment quite like here, offering holes that snake their way up into the jungle and down again to the ocean, the Andaman Sea. The golf course thrills the senses on every twist and turn, positioning of the tee shot is paramount as there are many dog leg par 4 and par 5 holes, none better than the uphill par 5 12th. The hum and the buzz of the Rain Forest’s bird life and wild life gives you a constant and unique thrilling feeling.

There are so many great holes, but the 5th to the 8th excel, with 2 great par 5 holes in a row at 7 and 8, whilst the back nine get even stronger. The 10th to the 17th are particularly impressive and exciting, holes 14-16 are just brilliant designed holes. This is a once in a lifetime must play experience and Ernie Els has done a very fine job.
Els Tulek is managed by Troon Golf so is maintained to the highest of standards.

      Morning David,

This time last week seems like a long time ago, our last day at the Datai was spent on the beach, dipping in and out of the sea, the warmest sea I have ever had the pleasure to run into.

Golf Asia were excellent, on no occasion did we have to wait for anything and the half day tour of Singapore was really interesting.

Six senses in Singapore was lovely, a small boutique hotel in a perfect location,  they did have a problem supplying gin and wine in the bar but this was down to the lack of shipment into the area, which as we all know was out of their control. They were very accommodating.
The rooms were small, absolutely sufficient for a 2 night stay but to really unpack for anymore than 2 nights would have been a challenge.

The Sanchaya was superb, the suites we were allocated were large and airy, it was good to get unpacked and settle in. Magnus was a charming host and regularly made himself available to discuss the work taking place with the pool, it wasn’t a problem at all.

The golf courses on Bintan were very good, in fact as we were leaving Magnus did ask our opinion about the courses. He hadn’t really looked at promoting The Sanchaya as a golf destination but given the lack of visitors due to Covid19 the reliable traffic for a relaxing few days for travellers from Singapore was under strain.  He realised he needed to diversify.

We all thought Ria Bintan was the best course, Laguna at the bottom, however saying this the courses were all great, Laguna had the only real traffic, seems they have a lot of players from Singapore at the weekend so maybe going forward get players on this course midweek.

The negatives for The Sanchaya. It was Singapore prices not Indonesia, alcohol prices really surprised us. Apart from golf there is very little else to do on the island, it seems focussed on the Chinese market. We didn’t use the beach on our day off as tar had been washed up over night, looked like this was a general problem and for that day we were told not to go into the sea.

The journey up to Langkawi, ferry and flight all good and excellent service once at the Datai.  What an amazing destination, there we no negatives.  Our rooms were lovely (obviously not as big as The Sanchaya but we knew that and it was a completely different set up).
The food and choice of food was amazing, the restaurants were superb and I personally couldn’t fault anything.  The Els Club what a setting, wish I was there right now.  The course itself is a real test of golf and we were all happy to play the course multiple times, it was a good challenge and the monkeys  and wildlife on the course made it entertaining.

If I were to go back to the area I would certainly go back to The Datai, I wouldn’t go back to The Sanchaya not that we didn’t enjoy it but it’s one of those places that once you’ve played the courses and stayed at the beautiful hotel there is nothing else to keep you going back for more,  it was a great combo for our tour and next time The Datai plus another destination.

Overall an absolutely fantastic holiday, thank you so much for all your organising and attention to detail we had a superb holiday and are already looking forward to Jamaica next year.

      Kindest regards
      Angie
