The Westin Resort Costa Navarino

five-gold-stars

RESORT OVERVIEW

The Westin Resort Costa Navarino is located on the beautiful Peloponnese peninsula in south-west Greece, with many characteristics of an Island venue, indeed it can even be described as an Island, connected to the mainland of Greece in just 2 places, The Corinth Canal and the Bridge of Rio Antirio.

Navarino Dunes is fast becoming one of the IN places in Europe to take a golfing holiday, although it is relatively difficult to get there – especially if you are based in the North of England, or Scotland, but once you are there it has everything you could want to make the ultimate golf and beach resort holiday!

The Westin Resort Costa Navarino is on the Ionian Sea, near the small city of Kalamata and 3 hours south west of Athens. Navarino Dunes has a wonderful natural beach with golden sands and a great Beach Club, two magnificent and contrasting golf courses, designed by Robert Trent Jones and Bernhard Langer in different locations, with varied designs and outlooks. They are a perfect match, both with great ocean views of the Ionian Sea! The Westin Resort Costa Navarino has a wide array of accommodation and restaurants to cater for all tastes and budgets, we would highlight the Infinity rooms, which have plunge pools just adjacent to the terrace, or balconies, they are great value and well appointed.

Some bedrooms and suites are beach front in the premium categories. The Agora (like a Village Square), which is located between the Westin and the Romanos Hotel is atmospheric in the afternoons and evenings and even a good place to hang out during the morning with its cafes, delis and boutiques. We would highlight the Italian restaurant in the Square as one of our favourite venues, it overlooks a massive film screen which shows concerts and films you can enjoy at night. However, you can also enjoy great Lebanese, Japanese, Steakhouse and Greek venues not forgetting the excellent buffet, with its pool side al fresco areas, it is a great place to have breakfast also!

Take half board for £39 per night and you can enjoy fixed men choices at several restaurants and the sumptuous buffet also.

The Westin Resort Costa Navarino has a super Children’s Club, which is on one side of the resort, with a great array of activities including a water park – families would mostly be accommodated in this area of this big resort, and at the same time golfers would normally be allocated rooms on the other side, nearer to the beach and The Romanos A Luxury Collection Resort sister hotel. What makes Navarino Dunes special is that there are so many different places to eat and drink, or chill on the resort, it has huge variety and appeal. If you stayed for just one week, you would not see everything you need to see, it is noticeable just how many golfers are returning already for a repeat vacation. You can dine up at The Romanos Hotel a Luxury Collection Resort in their fish restaurant called Armyra, or up at the terrace of the golf club at Flame (an impressive steak house) – which overlooks the 18th green.

The Spa at the Westin Resort Costa Navarino is extremely impressive and well worth mentioning, for Spa lovers, this is a great amenity, whilst for the traveller who enjoys lot of activity there are great yoga, pilates and fitness classes, which are mostly free of charge for residents.

We would recommend half board for those people who enjoy staying only on resort as it will save you a considerable sum and still give you good flexibility across a few restaurants, not just the buffet. However, for those people who like being adventurous we would highly recommend sticking with bed & breakfast and exploring the seaside towns and harbours at Gialova and Pylos, there are some great venues and the value of dining out is exceptional and they are very unspoiled towns, with stunning outlooks.

The Anazoe Spa takes in the lessons of Hippocrates and has some first-class spa treatments across a wide spectrum. For the sports enthusiast, you would enjoy the many group lessons on offer at the Resort including Yoga, Pilates, Keep-Fit sessions etc. There is an excellent tennis centre. 36 holes of Championship Course. Bike Hire for on road, or off road cycling. The Village Square has some first-class boutiques, cafes, delis and restaurants. The restaurants at the Westin and Romanos Hotels are sublime, so much choice! Choose between Buffet, Japanese, Greek Taverna, Steak House, Fish, Lebanese and Italian, plus the beach Club at lunch time and afternoons. You will never get bored with the dining here. The Beach Club is exceptional at the Navarino resort, great for swimming, water sports and just chilling, with excellent sun beds available. For families, there is an excellent kid’s area, with extensive gardens and a water park, with plenty of activities to keep your young ones occupied if you want some quiet time. There is also a Heritage Centre on the resort which is first class, discover the Heritage and Ecological importance of the projects embarked upon by the ambitious owners of the Navarino Resort, their green foot prints have been impressive thus far.

The rooms at the Westin Costa Navarino are well appointed with the lead in room category being in relative short supply (deluxe garden view), there are deluxe sea view, both of which are 39 square metres in size. Upgrade to superior rooms which are 49 square metres. We would recommend the Infinity rooms, which have plunge pools beyond the balconies, there are some with garden, some with sea and some with beach front locations also. If you fancy the best then there are suites also family suites, infinity suites, premium suites and premium infinity suites, all of which are 70 square metres in size, with varied locations!

This a is a big hotel with over 400 rooms, but one would argue that there really are no bedrooms, or parts of the resort with a poor outlook. The point is that if you are taking sea view you are still not very close to the beach, you would need to choose a premium category to be beach front, which are close enough to the ocean, but a longer walk back to the main restaurants for breakfast. All rooms feature the superb Starwood Heavenly Bed Mattress. All bedrooms have separate bath and shower, private balcony or patio and a 42-inch flat TV screen!

      The Hills Course

The Hills Course opened in early 2022 and was designed by Jose Maria Olazabal, an absolute masterpiece, the course starts at the top of the mountain with the first 2 holes running parallel to the first 2 holes on the equally impressive Olympic course. The first six holes are set on higher terrain with most holes flanked by deep vegetation, but when you start the last 12 holes from the 7th tee, you are on the lower plateau and the views open up and the course unfolds beautifully, with a superb natural flow. The whole course is a brilliant driving course and with hard running fairways, hills, plateaus, elevated tees and some classic dog legs, with rolling fairways sometimes requiring blind second shots on par 5s, but the par 3s are particularly memorable, really challenging long one shotters! The views on holes 7 – 18 offer ocean and coastal views and not purely mountain views.

The large greens are already impressive, and the short game is tricky as there are many run offs from elevated putting surfaces, which are also very well protected by bunkers.

      The Olympic Course

This was the first course to open on the Navarino Hills complex in the late Autumn of 2021, the course is an absolute gem – set on higher terrain than the Hills especially on the back nine – it was also designed by the Jose Maria Olazabal Team. The course twists its way around the mountain and has the very best panoramas of the entire coastline and the Bay of Navarino, every hole takes your breath away especially from 10 – 18. The outstanding par 3 s at 12 and 16 are the best on the entire complex! The Olympic course shares the same clubhouse with the Hills with a wonderful location with large sun terracing from the highest point on the Navarino Estate, the clubhouse is cool and contemporary with great service, cuisine and locker room amenities.

      The Bay Course

The Bay course was enhanced in 2019 with the opening of an exceptional clubhouse facility, which blends in so beautifully into the hillside above the first tee, arguably the most picturesque clubhouse location in Europe, but perhaps recently trumped by the new clubhouse at the Navarino Hills clubhouse. The views of the Bay of Navarino below the first fairway and green are just so exceptional, they simply take your breath away and as the first hole stretches down the hill to the water, it looks so tempting. The tough uphill par 3 second involves nerves of steel, with water all down the right and the picture postcard seaside town of Pylos in view from the green.

There are some incredibly tough par 5 holes on the course which are uphill and some exceptionally tough long par 3s, none more so than 10 and 11 which follow each other, nothing but the most perfect shot will get you on the green across sweeping valleys.

The Bay course is the easiest course to be distracted by the views, but also the easiest course to get out of position and lose balls in deep vegetation. Special mention of the 16th and 17 holes also which flank the Bay of Navarino and have extremely tight landing areas especially the long par 4 17th!

      The Dunes Course

Designed by Bernhard Langer this was always the best course on the Resort and especially popular because of its proximity to the hotels Westin and Romanos. The holes are laid out in close proximity to the ocean, across dunes and ridges, much closer to the sea than the courses at the Bay and the Hills, which are mostly much higher than sea level.

The Dunes is an extremely fair course, a tad less spectacular, but technically a marvellous layout, the greens are mostly crowned and large making the short game particularly demanding, but what makes the course particularly tough is the bunkering, not just greenside but also on the fairways. The Dunes is a big Championship layout and the ultimate test ,but with the new addition of the Hills and the Olympic one can no longer say it is the toughest test on the Estate.

The standout hole is the long par 4 second hole down the hill with the ocean backdrop behind the green and the gorgeous Romanos Hotel flanking the fairway to the left.
