JAMAICA

HALF MOON HOTEL

five-gold-stars

RESORT OVERVIEW

Half Moon is located on the north-west coast of Jamaica close to Montego Bay, the resort is in fact only 20 minutes’ drive from the International airport. The resort is the largest of its type in the Caribbean, spread out over 400 acres,as the rooms and restaurants are all close to the ocean down 1 long stretch of beach and coastline circa 4 km long. A spectacular piece of real estate!

If you are flying with British Airways to Kingston – Jamaica’s capital, it is a 140-minute transfer through the centre of the island and along the coast from east to west!

The resort has its own special 18-hole championship course at Half Moon, just across from the hotel, plus there are 3 other top golf courses in the region, namely White Witch, Cinnamon Hill and the Tryall Club.

The highlights of the hotel are many and varied, but we must point out the West Cottage area, where the rooms are right on the best beach for swimming. Deluxe and junior suites here are just idyllic! The newly refurbished lobby, which leads into the Lester’s Café and Cedar Bar are atmospheric. The sunsets from the Cedar Bar are memorable every night!

The Sugar Mill restaurant opposite the golf clubhouse is arguably the premium dining venue across Jamaica, plantation style colonial styling and eating inside or al fresco. The Il Giardino restaurant is a wonderful Italian just off Sunset Beach at West Cottages, superb cuisine, service and ambience. Whilst the breakfast area at Seagrape Terrace has wonderful views across the Ocean and amongst Seagrape Trees creating shade, is unbeatable for location.

The Hibiscus Junior Suites, which run right down the beach front close to the Ocean are beautifully appointed, luxurious and spacious – also they are very close to the main dining venues and Cedar Bar so convenient.

The golf course at Half Moon with its 19th hole bar and clubhouse is exceptional – here you can hire buggies or caddies and there is a real old charm of what is a classic parkland course, through large palm trees. Notably caddies are mandatory and buggies are optional at Half Moon – the real caddy experience and walking the course like professionals is unsurpassed.

Special mention of the excellent Fern Tree Spa, which has superb amenities and dynamic massages and the first-class tennis centre and gymnasium.

It is noteworthy that beyond the Fern Tree Spa and the Imperial Suite section of the resort Half Moon are constructing some new rooms and a new beach area, this is a long way from the main part of the resort and will not affect one’s holiday, the Pepperpot restaurant is closed as is the Dolphin lagoon. By November 2018 the resort will have a new main building and new bars and restaurants in a different area to the current lobby and Seagrape Terrace area.

Director’s Tip – book the junior suites with ocean view at West Cottages on Sunset Beach, or the Hibiscus Junior Suites leading up from the lobby to the Royal Court and play Cinnamon Hill and White Witch once each during your stay. Take the Premium all inclusive plan.

Piano Bar, Lester’s Café, Cedar Bar, Swim up Hibiscus Pool Bar, 19th Hole Bar, 2 Outdoor main pools, 2 main beaches Sunset & Sunrise, Water-sports, Fern Tree Spa, 18-hole Golf Course, Clubhouse, 8 Hard-Court Tennis centre, Gymnasium, Sugar Mill fine dining restaurant, Seagrape Terrace restaurant, Il Giardino Italian restaurant, free bicycle hire. Beach barbecue area. Wide choice of deluxe rooms and junior suites.

Ferntree Spa is a major highlight of the hotel at the far end of the resort, it is very secluded and has inside and outside treatment rooms, two of which are on stilts in the sea. The massage treatments vary from strong Swedish deep tissue massage to beauty care treatments. The Spa has a lovely sheltered pool area, relaxation rooms, sauna and Hammams and smaller rock pools. If you have a massage, or treatment you can use the Spa amenities for free your whole stay.

Book the junior suites with ocean view at West Cottages on Sunset Beach, or the Hibiscus Junior Suites leading up from the lobby to the Royal Court. The deluxe rooms also can have ocean view. As all the accommodation at Half Moon is close to the beach, only a very small number of rooms have no ocean view, these being some of the deluxe doubles. We do not recommend booking Royal Suites or Imperial Suites, until November 2018 when they will be new and refreshed.

All rooms have free WI-FI, ironing board, Hair-dryer, Furnished balconies or terraces, Magnifying Mirror, Bathroom & slippers, Mini-Bar, Safe, Coffee maker.

Half Moon Golf Club is one of the Caribbean’s classic golf courses. It is laid out over relatively flat land with some subtle hills, valleys and gorgeous lush vegetation, with centenary palm trees, flanking many fairways.

The design is tight on some holes, there are some excellent par threes and some classic short par 4s. Raised greens make the short game tricky. The course has some water features, which give it a little more difficulty and there are a lot of bunkers protecting the greens.
During the summer of 2017 the management are cutting down quite a lot of trees on the course to improve the growing areas and remove some of the shade on the fairways and greens and to also improve the design.

The caddies at Half Moon are superb and we would encourage everyone to play with a caddy, some have been there a very long time, 40 years!

Cinnamon Hill, just 15 minute’s away is a gorgeous design further into the hills, with more undulating holes in the back nine, with elevated tees and they even have 3 holes down close to the ocean to contrast with the back nine layout. One hole in the back nine goes past Johnnie Cash’s old Estate.

White Witch just 4 minute’s away is the most challenging of all the courses in Jamaica, set over very hilly terrain, it is as spectacular, as it is challenging, the ocean views here are the best of all although you are further away from the sea. Every hole is either uphill or downhill and the fairways are tight and the greens large but very fast and undulating and odd shapes!

Occasionally we can try and get our VIP guests on the Tryall Club, which has recently undergone a major renovation, especially of its greens.

The Half Moon staff were exceptional, incredibly helpful and friendly however with the addition of the Eclipse it has changed the dynamics of the resort.

We were all pleased that we were accommodated in the Founders Cove area (traditional Half Moon). A few things:

*the reception at Founders Cove wasn’t always manned which meant a hike over to the Eclipse... it should have been open at 08:00 each morning

      * the resort is now much bigger and has lost its intimacy, a large number of Americans now overwhelm the resort, and it was Spring Break

The golf courses were great, Kevin said hello on our first day at Half Moon it was good to meet him

      * Half Moon was in good condition apart from the bunkers which were very poor

      * Cinnamon Hills still my favourite, Mark and I played an extra round on our last day, great condition and spectacular views of the coast and inland to the hills

      * Tryalls was a very close second, a superb course and well worth the 45 min drive, interesting holes and in great condition

The food was fantastic, breakfast, a lot of choice, evening meals at the restaurants were all good, I had a couple of dodgy main courses but that was my bad luck on my selection rather than the restaurant.

I thoroughly enjoyed the holiday, everything worked like clock work so thank you as always for superb admin, it is really appreciated.

Would I go back to Half Moon .... I don’t believe I would, far too commercial now and for me it has lost its appeal as a smaller boutique resort.

Back to earth with a bump this morning, had to source my own breakfast.

Just a short note to say a big thank you for the professional way in which you made our holiday and celebration so very special. Well we've come back down to earth and as you said we would be were treated like royalty! We were in a suite in West Cottages number 2 and it was idyllic. From the the moment we arrived until our departure we were embraced by everyone in the Half Moon family.
