ABU DHABI

St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort

five-gold-stars

RESORT OVERVIEW

This is the most luxurious and high quality beach resort hotel in Abu Dhabi and its gardens at the rear of the hotel flank the impressive sand dunes which lie behind the fabulous beaches here on Saadiyat Island. The hotel is surrounded by the excellent Saadiyat Golf Course which is a links type lay out and although owned by a different company, a courtesy buggy shuttle can take you to the clubhouse from the hotel.

The St Regis is ostentatious and elegant, bright, stylish and contemporary in all aspects, the sunlight fills the hotel, the ocean and sky reflects right through the public areas of the hotel, making it a very special property and incredibly popular through the October to April months.

The hotel has wonderful terracing and outdoor pools, an exceptional gymnasium, spa and impressive lounges, bars and restaurants in contrasting styles and ambiences.

One can stay for 7 night at the St Regis and enjoy a fantastic golf package – we would recommend 2 rounds on Saadiyat and 2 rounds on Yas Links, with perhaps 1 round on Abu Dhabi National as well. There is much more to playing golf in this region, we would recommend a visit to the Grand Mosque, the superb museum the Louvre and the incredible theme park Ferrari World which has the biggest roller coasters on the planet. Also, a visit to the shopping malls or the Corniche beach areas of Abu Dhabi city are very much worth it.

Directors Tips – Book as early as you can to the St Regis as it is so popular during the winter months you need to book early to get good availability and the deals are less expensive if you book more than 120 days in advance.

There are 3 restaurants including the Asia de Cuba which is a Chinese/Latino fusion, Catch which has excellent seafood dishes with amazing views of the Corniche. Azura which has a Middle Eastern slant. The hotel has 3 excellent bars and lounges which include the St Regis Bar which is split into 3 very different sections, the library, main bar and the cigar lounge. The Bloody Mary which is a great cocktail bar and then there is the Villa Toscana which offers great views from the Terrace across to the Corniche. The St Regis has a first class spa and gymnasium, which is in a separate building. The hotel has superb pool terraces between the main building and the sand dunes and a first class Beach Club also. The hotel do not own the golf course, but it is right on your doorstep and a courtesy buggy will take you down to the Clubhouse.

The superior rooms at the St Regis are outstanding lead in categories and you can book land or sea view, there is no doubt that the sea view option is preferable, as the sunsets and the outlook are sensational. They vary from 44-55 square metres. If you like a little more space then plump for the junior suites, which have a separate lounge and offer golf or ocean views. There are also the elegant and opulent St Regis suites which can be as big as 97 square metres.

Abu Dhabi is a great golfing destination. There are 3 golf courses to choose from, all of which are very different and contrasting to each other, which makes it so enjoyable. The best known course is the most difficult of the three to play, as it is technically very demanding and long, the Abu Dhabi National is the host venue for the HSBC Tournament, located beside the Westin Abu Dhabi Hotel. The course is flat and long, its biggest hazards  are the large bunkers, which are both greenside and flank most fairways. There are not that many water features so the course is challenging enough without this additional difficulty. The driving is relatively easy, the main difficult comes with the second shots and greenside, the short game is indeed very challenging.

Saadiyat Golf course is a great design and wraps its way between the sand dunes of Saadiyat Island and the luxury resort hotels, especially the impressive St Regis Saadiyat. There are some very fine ocean side holes at Saadiyat which are very enjoyable and exhilarating. The course is a combination of links and parkland golf, but the over-riding impression is its links appeal. Large greens and great bunkering with fairwayswhich offer plenty of movement make it very attractive on the eye and the conditioning of the tees and fairways is first class.

Yas Links is our favourite course of the three and a real links test – the course is stuck out on quite a narrow strip of land on a peninsula and features large links style greens and lots of pot bunkers. It has spectacular views of the coastline from its extremities and every hole has views of ocean, or lagoon. The sand dunes are prominent on many holes and there are some exceptional par threes, some great short par 4s and some memorable par 5s – the toughest hole on the golf course is undoubtedly the 18th – what a climax and you cannot relax until you get this one out of the way.

Special mention of all 3 courses which have exceptional clubhouses and hospitality – they are so impressive, the locker rooms, amenities and restaurants are far better than courses in Europe, a real joy to unwind after your game. They also have first class practice facilities to get warmed up with pyramids of balls and plenty of space, all practice is of course complimentary.

We found the hotel to be excellent. Room was good the staff very helpful and friendly. We were on half board and were a little hesitant about whether we would enjoy eating in the buffet. It turned out to have high quality food with plenty of choice and different themes, so we were happy to eat there each night. The booze is expensive .

The beach and service there was very good.

I mentioned the golf earlier. We played Yas and Saddiyat twice and Abu Dhabi once. Yas had many areas which were in poor condition which was disappointing.  We played preferred lies. Saadiyat was very acceptable . We really enjoyed Abu Dhabi and would have preferred to have played that more than once but you suggested that it was too long/too difficult.

We had some brief contact with the local agent who was helpful. All the transfers worked well.

The late take off the return flight was a bit inconvenient but I’m not sure there is a solution to that as it seemed to be governed by how early flights can arrive at Heathrow.

Perhaps there might be another carrier/route.

      Regards

      Ronnie

Thank you for the feedback Ronnie, we will look into why Yas Links is in relatively poor nick at the moment, we are delighted that you enjoyed most aspects of the trip. There are no other flight options into Abu Dhabi as Etihad pulled out of their Edinburgh - Abu Dhabi flights earlier this year
