The Ritz-Carlton, Abama

The Ritz-Carlton, Abama  is located on the beautiful west coast of Tenerife, hidden away amongst banana plantations, on a dramatic piece of coastline, facing due west to the island of La Gomera. The resort lies about 40 minutes’ easy drive from Tenerife South airport, it is undoubtedly a dramatic and awe inspiring setting, with the best sunsets in Tenerife. The resort is about 15 minutes’ north of Costa Adeje and just 4 minutes’ drive down to the seaside town of Playa San Juan.

The resort is the most impressive all round resort in Europe and not just the best of the Canary Islands, The Ritz-Carlton, Abama has something to offer everyone, whether you are a couple, a family, or a group, whether you like the beach, pure golf, the spa – or just want to chill. The weather allows one to enjoy the resort 12 months a year, there really is no low season, – although the resort is cheaper during the May, June and September months and much more expensive over Easter, Xmas and New Year.

The hotel has the main building called the Citadel, where most of the rooms are located, with ocean or garden views including the 10th Club Level floor, which offers all ocean view rooms and a superb VIP Lounge adjacent, offering complimentary drinks and snacks all day, including breakfast in the morning and desserts in the evening! You also have access to a new VIP Pool area by the Persian Garden. Club is all about service and having a sense of belonging.

If you fancy something different, why not look at the adults only area at Tagor ‘Villas, which is located in the lush ‘villa’ garden area, down towards the beach. you can choose garden/pool  or ocean view and have direct access to an adults only pool area, with terrace and gardens, peace and seclusion guaranteed. Plus, you have access to the Mirador Restaurant for breakfast, which is so lovely and relaxing, close to the ocean with a very peaceful ambience offering al fresco eating. Tagor guests can enjoy also their own buggy for the duration of your stay to drive around the resort – down to the beach, up to the golf club and to the main Citadel. The Tagor Pool and Mirador restaurant are being being refreshed and renovated ready for a reopening in the late summer or autumn.

The Ritz-Carlton, Abama has a wide array of top quality dining venues, which includes two Michelin Star restaurants, both being outstanding, plus a brilliant Spanish venue, there is also a superb new 20/20 steakhouse and a refined new look Italian, not forgetting the wonderful Mirador fish restaurant, closer to the beach. If you love the beach and sea swimming, there is a perfect stretch of sand and lagoon style swimming in the ocean, with a  beach club facility. Whilst for the sports enthusiast, the Annabel Croft Tennis Academy and golf club at the top of the resort are unrivalled in the Canaries. The spa and the 24 hrs gymnasium are first class facilities at the Ritz-Carlton, Abama and there is so much more to do here than simply play golf.

Enjoy African style treatments, or massages, which include hot lava stones from Mount Teide.

Fish restaurant, El Mirador. 20/20 Steakhouse. Verona, Italian. Txoko, Spanish Tapas. La Veranda main buffet. Los Chozos, pool-side lunch. La Casa Club, al fresco golf club terrace. MB 2 star Michelin fine dining. Cubanika Cuban bar & snacks. Kabuki Asian style fine dining with 1 Michelin star. Tennis centre and Annabelle Croft academy. 18 hole golf course. Golf Academy and Practice. Adult only rooms and pool. VIP Club Level lounge and pool area. Beach Club. Children’s clubs. Bars. Mirador Adult only breakfast terrace. Spa. Gymnasium. Extensive gardens leading down to the beach. Adult only pools and family pool.

The deluxe rooms are, at 50 square metres superb, we would always recommend an ocean view if you can pay a little more, as the sunsets and views of the Ocean and La Gomera Island are exceptional. The junior suites are beautifully appointed in the main Citadel and the one bedroom suites which are in an L shape stunning with a big lounge and chill out area, although offering smaller balconies than the junior and deluxe rooms. We would recommend the Villa Double in the garden area for more privacy and seclusion, but particularly the Tagors’ Villa doubles, or one bedroom suites, which are in the adult only zone. Idyllic with access to the adult only pool area of the resort. Book on the golf & spa package and you should get a free upgrade to ocean view on arrival in resort.

Abama golf is at its best again in the 2017-18 season – there have been some marked improvements to the course and its conditioning since 2016. The first few holes climb the mountain towards Mount Teide and it is not until you reach hole 6, that you start to get the ocean views plunging back down the mountain towards the Hotel’s main Citadel. There is not a golf course in Europe more exhilarating than Abama – so many golf holes, with big elevation changes and most of which are downhill rather than uphill. The main obstacles are some big water hazards, old lava barrancas, banana trees and palms, which flank fairways and quite tricky greens, some of which are very treacherous and fast. The beauty of playing Abama is that buggies are always included. The stretch 7-12 are our stand out golf holes! Especially 7-11 which plunge down the mountain.

Directors tip – in the main golf season play as early as you can for a fast round of golf! Avoid 8 – 22 May and 4-15 September, as there will be greens maintenance. From 23 April to 19 October 2018 if you book any ocean view room or suites of any category & you will qualify for free golf daily with buggy saving a fortune.

Hi David

Thank you for email and we did indeed have a great holiday.

Firstly weather was excellent for the week. Didn’t see a cloud.

One day was very windy and made the golf very tricky!

All your recommendations were ideal. The accommodation was great and easy access to pool and it’s endless supply of wine. We felt standard of all the food was excellent. A couple of the restaurants were shut but did not impact much on us.

It’s A lovely golf course. Enjoyable for Lynne yet quite a challenge for me. Especially lightening fast greens with some challenging ( if not impossible) pin positions.

We played one afternoon when pace of play was painful so chose to play at 8.30 other days which was much better.

The transfers were excellent punctual and felt luxurious.

We really enjoyed the resort and will surely return and also recommend it (and yourself!) to friends.

Flight home into storm Ciara was bit scary. Got down on 2nd attempt with threat of diversion to Manchester looming.

Thanks again for all your help.

Thanks Mike and delighted that you had great weather and enjoyed your first trip to Abama

Hi David.

These were the notes we made the penultimate day of our holiday for a survey which the Hotel promised but we didn’t receive.

Pool service was excellent

Concierge service good

Golf service excellent

Room cleaning good but inconsistent in what was replaced and put out each day, including 1 chocolate for the whole period

Check in was good

Shuttle service to golf was good

Use of our own buggy for the resort was essential to get from our room to restaurants, etc. We could not have managed without it.

Thanks for the feedback o your first visit to Abama, think perhaps that a smaller boutique hotel may suit you for another trip.

Hi David

We are back home safely.

We want to thank you very much for organising our holiday, everything was just perfect; right from the beginning of our holiday to the end, the transfers were amazing and the hotel was just fantastic, great location.

The staff were so great there, always smiling and very helpful,  Our room was perfect, the restaurants were amazing,  we ate at MB for Peppes birthday: and had the taster menu. cannot fault this beautiful Hotel, would recommend to anyone.

Thank you once again and hopefully will book with you on our next holiday.

Delighted that you had such a super holiday Rossana - Abama really has something to offer every type of customer and at any time of the year, it is brilliant in summer and winter.

I hope you are well.  I just wanted to say again how much we loved the Abama especially the room (127, end suite nearest beach road end) it really was superb and so comfortable.  Breakfasts were great in Mirador, slight contra temps with regard to orange juice as they kept insisting the juice they served was fresh when it wasn’t or didn’t taste like it, in the end we got ours freshly squeezed !  Service was impecable.  We ate in Verona and 20/20, both were very good but thought 40euros cheapest bottle of wine a bit steep especially in Spain.  We raided the local supermarket who had a fabulous Rose for 2.15 euros !  Had room service a couple of nights and a couple of nights picnics !!  The room was too lovely not to get the maximum out of it.  Also ate a couple of nights in San Juan as the taxi was so cheap - fabulous restaurant called “Marsala” down by the Port but a bit smarter than the others, quite limited menu but it was spotlessly clean and absolutely delicious food.

Golf course was amazing, stunning views and so well maintained.  Probably a bit too challenging for me (not your problem) but got round and thoroughly enjoyed it.  We were so lucky with the weather, wall to wall sunshine every day.

Thank you for organising our trip so efficiently, it really was a wonderful holiday.  I may have a couple of minor questions on upcoming trip, I have received the documentation thank you.

With best wishes

I am delighted that you enjoyed the Adult Only section at the Ritz-Carlton, Abama - Tagor !! It is like a boutique hotel within a large resort!

by Sarah on Island Golf Holidays

Dear David,

We thoroughly enjoyed our second visit to Abama.

We were fortunate to have a room upgrade to a garden villa which had wonderful sea views. Also gave us the opportunity to breakfast at El Mirador which was very pleasant.

There were no problems with the hotel, staff, cuisine, cleanliness etc all very good.

The adult only pool was very busy and tricky to find a spot later in the day.

As you know we ate in most of the restaurants good choice, service and cuisine.

We had a very pleasant evening in MB and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

They even produced a birthday cake for Peter which was lovely.

The golf experience, all the golf assistants were very friendly and helpful. The course was in good condition, it’s just a pity that the a few people do not appreciate looking after the greens! Having unlimited golf was brilliant and even managed 27 holes one day.

The weather was perfect for golf a good a mix of sun and cloud temperature was perfect.

We would go back to Abama but would probably choose B&B to give us flexibility for going out and about.

Once again we have been very happy with the personal service we have received from you and look forward to booking with you again.

Thank you very much.

Kind regards

Thanks for the feedback Sarah, there are a few restaurants down in Playa San Juan, much less expensive but not with the same quality, nice for a change on some evenings, it is only a 5 minute taxi ride away

Abama was great and the golf course superb.

No real issues with the maintenance week activities which and helped slow the greens down a bit, They must be very difficult at their peak condition. Starters and marshals were very helpful.

Golf club bar and restaurant views were spectacular and level of service was excellent. I played with different opponents each day everyone was very friendly . If you did not get on the course before 10am it was taking about 5 hours to get round. This happened to me on day 2 but the starter was very accommodating and slotted me in early for the remaining rounds.

First 3 days weather was not the best. Overcast and a bit windy. Perfect for golf but Lindsay was a bit disappointed as she had to cover up due to low temperatures. Cheered up to usual temperatures for the last 4 days which was great. Adult only pool down at Mirador was a great spot and very relaxing.

Hotel service was excellent and restaurant quality very good. Hotel courtesy bus to the golf course was very good and on demand. Two star MB restaurant experience on my birthday was fantastic. The private beach and beach club/bar were first class.
