The Romanos Resort Costa Navarino

five-gold-stars

RESORT OVERVIEW

This is the most upscale hotel on the Costa Navarino Estate, within the Navarino Dunes part of the Resort, within walking distance of the excellent Langer designed Dunes Course and adjacent to the larger Westin Resort.

The hotel has a wonderful ambience and the moment that you arrive in the front entrance and lobby you have a breath-taking panorama of the ocean beyond the hotel gardens, you know then that you have arrived somewhere a bit special.

The Romanos oozes quality in all aspects, great rooms, with lovely bathrooms, sizeable balconies and even the lead in categories have nice garden views inside the resort, some rooms overlook the Dunes second hole, the top rooms have infinity pools with close proximity to the beach front. The impressive Anazoe Spa is one of the highlights of the resort, with also a wide selection of superb a la carte restaurants, supplemented by the first class Pero buffet restaurant which also is where you take al fresco breakfasts with a wonderful array of hot and cold buffet every morning.

You can enjoy exceptional a la carte dining at venues such as Du Luigis, the Italian, the steak house Flame at the Dunes, the first class Armyra fish & seafood restaurant, as well as the exceptional Japanese Onuki and the Lebanese Nargile, it is a mouth watering prospect.

The Romanos has a superb beach access and is great for swimming and or some water sports, a little quieter than the Westin which is more oriented for families with children during the main summer holiday periods and half term periods. The brilliant Barbouni Beach Restaurant is also worth mentioning as it is a lovely place to hang out after a swim or some sun bathing, even open in the early part of the evening so one can see the sunset whilst enjoying some fine cuisine.

The golf at The Romanos is now unsurpassed in Europe, you have 72 holes all on one Estate, the recent addition of the challenging and eye catching 36 holes at Navarino Hills, with the Olympic and Hills courses opening in late 2021 and early 2022 means that Navarino is the best golf venue in southern Europe. A shuttle runs from the Dunes Clubhouse to the other 2 clubhouses at the Bay and at the Hills, a very slick operation.

Special mention of the very high-class service levels at The Romanos, in this post Pandemic World this is more the exception than the rule definitely, very good indeed.

The tropical vast garden areas between the main buildings and the beach  also offer a wide selection of pool terraces for sun bathing and the resort has a very lovely beach facility which is fully serviced for drinks and snacks with close proximity to a first class beach fish restaurant called Barbounis.

Here is a list of the main facilities: –

Pero buffet. Flame steakhouse. Barbouni Beach Restaurant. Da Luigis Italian. Kooc contemporary Greek. Onuki Japanese. Armyra by Papaioanou. Nargile Lebanese. Souvlakerre Greek traditional. Kafennion & Deli, café style dining.

72 holes of golf Dunes, Bay, Olympic & Hills courses.

      Tennis centre. Activity centre.

      Anazoe Spa

The lead in room categories are first class with lovely bright bathrooms, separate shower and bath, spacious balconies with lovely garden views being the worst category you could be allocated. If you are lucky, you may be allocated an outside room overlooking the 2nd green, or fairway of the Dunes Course. If you have a larger budget, we would recommend upgrading to deluxe sea view rooms, as the beach and sea views are lovely. Then there are Infinity Garden View rooms which have plunge pools on your balconies.

But we would recommend the premium deluxe sea view rooms, as these are described as beach front location, with even better premium deluxe sea view with infinity pools on your balcony, stunning.

There are also an array of grand suites to choose from if your budget allows, just call us and we can guide you through the best options, but they are exceptional and a higher level of spec than those that exist at the neighbouring Westin property.

      The Hills Course

The Hills Course opened in early 2022 and was designed by Jose Maria Olazabal, an absolute masterpiece, the course starts at the top of the mountain with the first 2 holes running parallel to the first 2 holes on the equally impressive Olympic course. The first six holes are set on higher terrain with most holes flanked by deep vegetation, but when you start the last 12 holes from the 7th tee, you are on the lower plateau and the views open up and the course unfolds beautifully, with a superb natural flow. The whole course is a brilliant driving course and with hard running fairways, hills, plateaus, elevated tees and some classic dog legs, with rolling fairways sometimes requiring blind second shots on par 5s, but the par 3s are particularly memorable, really challenging long one shotters! The views on holes 7 – 18 offer ocean and coastal views and not purely mountain views.

The large greens are already impressive, and the short game is tricky as there are many run offs from elevated putting surfaces, which are also very well protected by bunkers.

      The Olympic Course

This was the first course to open on the Navarino Hills complex in the late Autumn of 2021, the course is an absolute gem – set on higher terrain than the Hills especially on the back nine – it was also designed by the Jose Maria Olazabal Team. The course twists its way around the mountain and has the very best panoramas of the entire coastline and the Bay of Navarino, every hole takes your breath away especially from 10 – 18. The outstanding par 3 s at 12 and 16 are the best on the entire complex! The Olympic course shares the same clubhouse with the Hills with a wonderful location with large sun terracing from the highest point on the Navarino Estate, the clubhouse is cool and contemporary with great service, cuisine and locker room amenities.

      The Bay Course

The Bay course was enhanced in 2019 with the opening of an exceptional clubhouse facility, which blends in so beautifully into the hillside above the first tee, arguably the most picturesque clubhouse location in Europe, but perhaps recently trumped by the new clubhouse at the Navarino Hills clubhouse. The views of the Bay of Navarino below the first fairway and green are just so exceptional, they simply take your breath away and as the first hole stretches down the hill to the water, it looks so tempting. The tough uphill par 3 second involves nerves of steel, with water all down the right and the picture postcard seaside town of Pylos in view from the green.

There are some incredibly tough par 5 holes on the course which are uphill and some exceptionally tough long par 3s, none more so than 10 and 11 which follow each other, nothing but the most perfect shot will get you on the green across sweeping valleys.

The Bay course is the easiest course to be distracted by the views, but also the easiest course to get out of position and lose balls in deep vegetation. Special mention of the 16th and 17 holes also which flank the Bay of Navarino and have extremely tight landing areas especially the long par 4 17th!

      The Dunes Course

Designed by Bernhard Langer this was always the best course on the Resort and especially popular because of its proximity to the hotels Westin and Romanos. The holes are laid out in close proximity to the ocean, across dunes and ridges, much closer to the sea than the courses at the Bay and the Hills, which are mostly much higher than sea level.

The Dunes is an extremely fair course, a tad less spectacular, but technically a marvellous layout, the greens are mostly crowned and large making the short game particularly demanding, but what makes the course particularly tough is the bunkering, not just greenside but also on the fairways. The Dunes is a big Championship layout and the ultimate test ,but with the new addition of the Hills and the Olympic one can no longer say it is the toughest test on the Estate.

The standout hole is the long par 4 second hole down the hill with the ocean backdrop behind the green and the gorgeous Romanos Hotel flanking the fairway to the left.

I wanted to just say thank you for a wonderful holiday.

Costa Navarino even managed to surpass our expectations this time. The Romanos accommodation is world-class, the resort continues to develop (I hope they’re making money with all this investment and a shortish season?) and the weather was hot and sunny with little wind from dawn to dusk.

I know your thoughts on the golf courses but am not sure you have played all four? My personal favourite comfortably remains The Dunes because it is the most challenging, but the other three are all more scenic and great fun to play. The Bay is breathtaking, quirky and highly entertaining, it also offers the best chance of a low score. The two new Hills courses are again incredibly located as is their Clubhouse with great views over the mountains and the Bay, take a while to get going, but have terrific back nines and a real feel-good factor.

With regard to the restaurants, Flames at the resort is a magnificent steak restaurant and quite outstanding. We ate out in Gialova three times at either Kochili or Notre Maison and also at the village next to the resort at Katerina’s. All three are excellent, good value and authentically Greek.

We are having fabulous time in Costa Navarino. Our room (3212) has spectacular view of the second fairway on Dunes with extra bonus of the partial sea view in the distance. The hotel and all dining options are superb. Day off golf today having played 9 rounds so far. The Dunes probably in the best condition but all courses are great. The transfers are very reliable and our golf bags move seamlessly between the different locations. The new Clubhouse at Bay is very stylish with amazing views and beautiful interior design.

Not surprisingly we have started talking about coming back! We will need to consider the timings carefully with my Lady Captain calendar.

Thank you again for organising this trip.

      Back in sunnier climes!!

Yes, Costa Navarino is a top place - especially for golfers.

We enjoyed all four of the courses which, without exception, were superb. The Olympic and Hills are, as you know, more elevated with wonderful panoramas, natural habitat and wildlife (especially the butterflies and birds at the Hills). The Bay earth-sheltered clubhouse is spectacularly unique and the course an excellent holiday challenge with lovely sea views. Personally, the Dunes was my favourite. Generous fairways, perhaps, but what about all those bunkers (perhaps I just had a tough round!).

For the duration of our stay (6ngts), we were happy with the room - a deluxe with partial sea view. The room quality was good. Would be tempted by a premium deluxe or, for size, or a Grand 1 bed suite (garden view) next time.  If with friends we'd likely go for one of the 2 bed villas.

Service levels were excellent throughout - a highlight, especially compared to hospitality some other destinations eg. our recentish experiences in the Caribbean (where we feel customer service levels generally are not what they were or should be).

We ate at the 1827 lounge  Nargile (Middle Eastern), KOOC and Flame (Dunes Clubhouse). The food/wine at most was good, although Christine and I felt the food was too dry at Nargile and, overall, at the on-site restaurants not value for money. It was definitely better value to hire a taxi and eat locally......1 (Anama) of our 2 meals out in Gialova was excellent. Service everywhere was again very good.

Breakfast at Pero (Romanos) was superb - the best buffet-style we've experienced. Similar breakfast feedback from our mates at the Westin.

The Romanos pool set-up is very good - albeit it would be nice if they had an adult-only area - it's large enough to accommodate one. Interestingly there's a children's pool area but which remained virtually unused whilst we were there. Occupancy wasn't high at the Romanos but there were still plenty of golfers and families.....

In summary, we had a great trip!! We hope the Simpson's enjoy themselves as much as we did.
