Welcome to Island Golf Holidays Top 20 Resorts

Choosing our top 20 hotels and resorts from the 220 venues featured on our website portfolio has been great fun, no doubt it will always create some controversy, but clearly a great exercise and an excellent opportunity for our customers and potential customers to see where are the very best places to stay and play.

I have been fortunate enough over recent years to visit most, but not quite all our featured resorts and hotels, the selection has been based on my own views and influenced by feedback from customers on their return from their holidays also.

How do you measure greatness and qualify for a top 20 ranking? As this can never be easy with so many factors involved, but my comments below provide you a good idea on how I came to my ultimate conclusions.

The location of the hotel, or resort is often very significant, it may have a WOW factor in this aspect, one great example of this is the splendid Fullerton Bay in Singapore, or the stunning vistas and sunsets from the Ritz-Carlton, Abama in Tenerife.

Another factor is the quality of the amenities of a hotel, or resort which may be outstanding, the wide choice of dining venues, exceptional indoor and outdoor amenities. This may also include the Wow factor of the hotels bedrooms.

One factor which also comes strongly into play is something a little harder to measure and may not be obvious just by reading about the property on a website, or brochure and that is the friendliness of the staff and ambience that is created within an establishment, this often is what brings people back to that venue, a home from home is something we all grow to love. A venue or hotel where the staff know exactly who you are when you check in and throughout your stay, you feel liked and you feel connected. This is so important. A great example of this is the Hotel Las Madrigueras which always punches above its weight, but has such delightful staff members.

Finally no doubt because we are a golf specialist niche operator we also bring into account the quality and ease of access as well as the proximity of a hotel or resorts to its golf course and accompanying facilities, one great example of this is the Westin Costa Navarino and its 36 brilliant holes of golf which will be enhanced in the coming 2 years with 36 more additional holes being completed. For the venues that did not make it into our top 10% we still love you, but you just missed out on being included this time round and we will try to make this an annual exercise to see if we get any movement in the rankings.

Enjoy the Adventure and Dream of Your Next Overseas Holiday!

Best Wishes

Island Golf Holidays

No 20: Verdura Resort, Sicily

This elegant golf and beach hotel is situated in the south west corner of Sicily and makes it into the top 20, because of its superb location very close to the beach and its magnificent 36 holes of golf designed by Kyle Philips – many of which have a strong links flavour. The hotel bedrooms, cuisine and wine list are first class and the Spa facility is exceptional.

The resort is owned by The Rocco Forte Collection and this was their first resort style non city located property. This is in a beautiful part of the island from where one can explore some wonderful towns and mountain villages.

No 19: Heritage Awali Golf & Spa Resort, Mauritius

This African style beach and golf resort hotel offers the visitor the best value combined with quality all-inclusive in Mauritius. The hotel is located just 2-3 minute’s drive to the best golf course on the Island, Heritage Golf Club.

It makes it into our top 20 because of the quality and value of the food & beverage inclusions, wonderfully friendly staff and it has superb evening entertainment and ambience especially at night. In addition to the above the Awali’s golf offering is second to none! The Spa and choice of restaurants at the Awali are exceptionally good.

No 18: Las Madrigueras Golf Resort & Spa, Tenerife

This exquisite boutique hotel makes it into our top 20 because it has such an idyllic golfing location and set up, whereby on their Eagle package you can play unlimited golf and drive your buggy directly from the hotel to the Las Americas Course.

Furthermore, the staff at Las Madrigueras are so amicable and it is a definite home from home type property, where everyone knows who you are on arrival. The outside terraces and gardens are gorgeous and dining, or having breakfast al fresco is a reality all year long.

No 17: Constance Belle Mare Plage Resort, Mauritius

This fine resort is the best-known golf beach hotel on the island of Mauritius, with 36 holes of excellent golf and an idyllic beach very close to most bedrooms and suites.

The resort offers a very good all-inclusive concept, which includes most of your food and beverage requirements, as well as daily free golf and buggy hire on the Legends and Links Courses. The architecture and location also have a definite WOW factor when you arrive this is very apparent. The choice of venues for lunch and dinner and overall friendly ambience also help elevate the resort into our top 20, but the golf is the over-riding quality amenity

No 16: Anahita Golf Resort & Spa, Mauritius

Anahita makes it comfortably into our top 20 resorts, the venue is very different to the other beach hotels on the Island, in that the accommodation units are not particularly close to the beach, with the exception of the Prestige Ocean View Suites.

There is so much space in the resort, it is more lie a domain than a hotel for sure, it is very chilled and laid back, has the most beautiful of locations on the east coast of the island, mangrove swamps and sheltered beaches etc. The fine dining here is incredible at the Signature restaurant, whilst the inclusion of two very different exciting and contrasting golf courses, the Els and Langer designs are breath-taking.

The resort boasts access by boat from its own jetty to the remarkable Ile aux Cerfs Island and its own beautiful secret beach and stunning golf course. Another factor in our selection is the size of the bedrooms and suites which are very generous as well as the high levels of personal service on the resort, exceptional all round.

No 15: Constance Lemuria Resort, Seychelles

This beautiful resort on the gorgeous island of Praslin is arguably the most picturesque and idyllic resort out of our entire top 20 venues. Only accessible via a domestic flight from Mahe to Praslin it is not the easiest place to access, but it is true Paradise Found. The resort qualifies comfortably into our top 20, not just because of the exceptional natural beauty of its location and spectacular beaches and scenery, but also because of the very high levels of personalised service, refined cuisine and stunning bedrooms. The impressive golf course is the only one in the Seychelles Islands and has wonderful scenery. Residents can enjoy free daily golf.

No 14: St Regis Saadiyat Island, Abu Dhabi

The St Regis boasts the most picturesque location, probably, of all the hotels in the United Arab Emirates. The hotel has wonderful vistas across the natural dunes and wild beaches of Saadiyat Island. The resort also is surrounded by a terrific links golf course which wraps its way around the front of the hotel and is an absolute joy to play, with 4 or 5 classic links holes with pot bunkers and ocean views.

The hotel has stunning bedrooms, public areas, bars and restaurants, with spectacular sun terraces and pool terraces, there is always a buzz and great ambience and the property is unrivalled on this coastline. A magical place for a winter holiday because of the exceptional temperatures from October to April.

No 13: Constance Prince Maurice, Mauritius

This elegant boutique hotel located on the east coast of Mauritius is the jewel in the crown of the Constance chain of resorts in the Indian Ocean. The hotel is exclusive, with an incredibly privileged setting on a wonderful coastline and estuary. The hotel has a gorgeous setting with wonderful outdoor restaurants, stunning pool terraces and incredibly well-appointed bedrooms. The personalised service, haute cuisine, impressive wine cellars and its attachment to two great golf courses (Legends and Links) with green fees of less than £20 per round and with a free courtesy shuttle service, eases the resort comfortably into our high ranking in 2020.

No 12: Seaside Grand Hotel Residencia, Gran Canaria

This is a new addition in 2020 to the Island Golf Holidays portfolio and is in a very special location in the lovely seaside resort of Maspalomas, in a very private and secluded avenue.

The hotel has the reputation as the very best boutique luxury property in the entire Canary Islands, enhanced by wonderful friendly staff, incredible personalised service, beautifully appointed bedrooms and top-level cuisine and a la carte dining options. The tropical gardens and outlook are also well worth a mention and the excellent Spa does not disappoint. Golfers can enjoy a package with rounds on the superb Maspalomas, Anfi Tauro and Meloneras courses, as well as Salobre

No 11: Shangri-La Touessrok Resort, Mauritius

This beautiful and eye-catching property is set on the lovely east coast of Mauritius. The resort is on a very pointy and stunning peninsula with wonderful views of other islands to the east including, the pretty Ile Aux Cerfs, which is the location for the excellent Bernhard Langer course.

What sets the pulse racing when you first arrive at the Shangri-La? The resort has 3 very distinct and different beaches all facing in different directions, which gives it naturally very different outlooks from a variety of bedrooms and suites.

The restaurants are also extremely different and contrasting too which gives it a very exotic flavour. The outstanding Frangipani Island part of the resort is accessible via a bridge over the inlet from the ocean tides and here you have the adult only area with the most stunning option of suites. The Spa and adult only pool and the best beach lie on this Island, which are an absolute treat to experience.

Residents can now enjoy the wonderful golf courses for free at Ile Aux Cerfs and the Els Course at Anahita, all these factors give it a very high overall ranking. The Shangri-La Touessrok definitely possesses the WOW factor.

No 10: Westin Costa Navarino Resort, Greece

The best golf resort in Greece and less than 4 hours’ drive south west of Athens lies this idyllic and extensive golf and beach resort, which currently has two golf courses (the Bay and the Dunes) and two hotels, the Westin and the Romanos properties. The resort is in a stunning spot in the heart of the beautiful Peloponnese, which is a wonderful and spectacular narrow coastline.

The Resort eases into our top 10 by dint of its exhilarating location, the fact that it has two contrasting and challenging Championship golf courses and the resort has an exceptional array of a la carte restaurants shared across both hotels, together with a magnificent al fresco buffet restaurant. Navarino has an awesome beach and an incredibly relaxed and gorgeous ambience, great for golfers, families and beach enthusiasts. It is also a superb spot to stay for exploring lots of this wonderful region.

No 9: Fullerton Bay Hotel, Singapore

This outstanding hotel located on the waterfront of the city of Singapore is a breath-taking property and, in our view, the number one place to stay in Singapore without doubt.

The hotel has incredible views from lounges, bars and restaurants of the bay and waterfront, the standard of rooms, service and cuisine is off the normal charts and the property is just so chic, cool and sophisticated.

Quite simply it is the place to stay in Singapore, to break up your journey to Malaysia, or Indonesia, the hotel has definitely got the all-round WOW factor whether you play golf or do not, but the best place to stay for a promenade, a stunning location.

No 8: Casa De Campo Resort & Villas, Dominican Republic

Casa de Campo cruises into our top 10 at number 8 with the potential to move up the rankings to the top 5 in the future as the resort has absolutely everything you could desire in a top-notch golf and beach resort. Imagine a resort with 63 holes of mouth-watering golf on one Estate, where you are allocated your own 4-seater buggy for easy access to all facilities.

Imagine a resort with an exceptional Beach Club, Yachting Marina and a Medieval mountain-top village where you can play the best course in Latin America (the awesome Teeth of the Dog), all of this is a reality at Casa de Campo. The resort also earns it position within our top 10 because of its exceptional high class all-inclusive and wide array of a la carte restaurants.

No 7: Half Moon, Jamaica

The Half Moon in Jamaica ranks as high as no 7 in our top 20 worldwide hotels and resorts. Located at Montego Bay in the north west of this big Island the resort has the most idyllic of settings, with all the rooms, suites and most of the food and beverage outlets being so close to the ocean front. Half Moon has just undergone a massive renovation plan, which reopened just before the enforced lockdowns in late March 2020.

The new Eclipse Wing gives the customer a brand-new contemporary experience, with a new beach, new restaurants and bars like Delmare and North Pointe and stylish chic bedrooms in a new location by the Sunrise Beach. The hotels’s most famous location is the Founders Cove, West Cottages which will continue to be many people’s favourite. Visitors can enjoy golf on 3 fantastic, yet contrasting 18-hole courses, together with the best beach life and cuisine, great water-sports and a superb Spa. What makes Half Moon though is the people, the staff are just the best and it is without doubt what we describe as a Home from Home venue.

Half Moon also offer an exceptional all-inclusive food & beverage option which is still popular with the UK market.

No 6: Ritz-Carlton, Abama Tenerife

Located on the spectacular west coast of Tenerife the resort is substantial in terms of size and natural space, with incredible vistas from its high location across the Atlantic Ocean to the island of La Gomera, presenting the best sunsets imaginable, certainly the most impressive in Tenerife.

The venue comfortably qualifies for our top 20 and just misses out on the top 5 this time around but continues to be one of our clients favourite all round golf and beach hotel venues. The wide array of a la carte restaurants are first class not just in quality cuisine and service, but also in terms of locations and ambiences. Nothing being better than the El Mirador fish restaurant on the cliff tops at the bottom of the resort. The 2-star Michelin MB also has a massive WOW factor.

The hotel has a very special and spectacular golf course, the Abama course stuns the senses at every twist and turn. The resort also has an unrivalled choice of accommodation which includes rooms and suites in the Main Citadel, but also the adult only garden section called Tagor, with exclusive adult only pool areas and special restaurant privileges, as well as your own dedicated resort buggy for independence. The resort definitely has the potential to make the top 3!

No 5: The Sanchaya Resort, Bintan Island Indonesia

The Sanchaya was discovered by Island Golf Holidays in Autumn 2019 on an extensive exploration inspection trip of the Far East. Located on one of the most beautiful and idyllic islands, less than 1 hour from Singapore, it truly is Paradise Found. For a relatively new hotel to have such a high ranking so quickly is extraordinary and it illustrates just how excellent this hotel is.

The Sanchaya makes it into our top 5, because it has a real WOW location, thanks to a beautiful quiet and secluded location and outstanding beach, unbelievable standards of service and the friendliest best trained staff possible. The hotel has gorgeous bedrooms, suites and just impeccable public areas and 2 fabulous restaurants and a wonderful pool decking. Al fresco dining and breakfasts can be taken here with sea views all year around.

All in all, it is a dream holiday venue and then the golf courses – are absolutely sublime, ocean and woodland golf set in and alongside magnificent Rain Forest, with memorable views and wildlife. The Ria Bintan Course within 10 minutes drive was ranked no 2 in our Worldwide top 20 golf course ran king 4 weeks ago!

The Sanchaya managed to do some excellent renovation work to the Great House, its bedrooms and the pool decking area just before Lockdown! The Sanchaya is the ultimate boutique hotel and is definitely a Home from Home, albeit a long way to go back to every year!

No. 4: Rosewood Bermuda

The Rosewood is the best and most exclusive address on the island of Bermuda in the picturesque Tucker’s Point on the east coast. The hotel has the WOW factor from the very first moment you drive up the approach drive and check in to the lobby.

The bars and restaurants are just exceptional and offering the visitor superb views and wonderful levels of service in the traditional Bermudan style. The hotel has a high location with panoramic views across the Atlantic, boasting a spectacular cliff top setting overlooking the Estuary and the Atlantic Ocean, unquestionably a WOW spot.

The golf course adjacent is one of the two finest courses on Bermuda, a clifftop and ocean side challenge, exhilarating and right next door to the equally famous private club Mid Ocean.

The lead in bedrooms at the Rosewood are exquisite and boutique properties do not get any better than here. The Rosewood is definitely worthy of our top 5 ranking within the best 20 resorts that we have selected across the world.

No 3: Tortuga Bay, Punta Cana Dominican Republic

The Tortuga Bay is one of the finest boutique hotels in the Caribbean and yet not very well known in Europe, but we rank it as high as 3 in the world, we were lucky enough to discover it several years ago and have been sending customers there ever since. A perfect boutique hotel, with the most stunning of locations and with an idyllic beach, the rooms are just gorgeously appointed with junior suites located right on the beach front.

The staff and personalised service here are brilliant and because the hotel offers a very high class a la carte all-inclusive option, with ample variety of fine dining venues, this is very well received and popular with UK visiting guests. The resort has that WOW factor for sure, which helps its very high ranking and the golf courses owned by the same company are just the best of the best, La Cana adjacent has 27 great holes and then you have the awesome Corales 10 minute’s away. Plus, the equally breath-taking Punta Espada, which was ranked as our number 1 golf course worldwide. Tortuga is indeed the ultimate boutique resort and home for many years of the inimitable fashion super star Oscar de la Renta.

No 2: The Datai, Langkawi Malaysia

The Datai was extremely close to winning the number 1 spot and will always threaten to be the best of the best. The resort experienced a massive upgrade in 2018, which saw it elevated back to the very top of the tree. There is no doubt that even with the strong competition shown by other venues in our top 10 especially, nowhere comes close to the sheer beauty of this resort, it may well be the loveliest resort in the entire world. The Datai also has the benefit of offering a stunning golf course!

The location then is unrivalled, set in the midst of a wonderful unspoiled Rain Forest on the quiet and secluded island of Langkawi, off the west coast of Malaysia, but with the contrasting and exhilarating location of accommodation and restaurants, one can also enjoy the Ocean and one of the World’s finest beaches, (top 5 as rated by National Geographic Magazine). The resort is split into 3 sections…the Canopy section, The Rain Forest section Villas and the Ocean Villa section. The staff, ambience, natural world, the rhythm of the jungle, wildlife, exceptional Asian cuisine just blow you away.

It is one of those rare places you really do not want to leave and the percentage of repeat business is more than 65%, which tells its own story.  The Ernie Els designed Rain Forest course is just fantastic -a roller coaster through massive Rain Forest Trees and Jungle plunging twice down to the Andaman Sea, it stuns your senses at every twist and turn.

No 1: Heritage Le Telfair Golf & Wellness Resort, Mauritius

The Heritage Le Telfair wins the number one spot in 2020, no mean feat, it has been open since 2005 and the consistency of its excellence is spell binding. The Resort has everything you could want to experience for the ultimate golf and beach holiday, taking in the best golf course in Mauritius.

The Resort has a beautiful, picturesque location in the district of Bel Ombre in the south west of the island. The hotel has raised the bar in the all-inclusive stakes, fine wines from around the world, fine champagne and a choice of up to 9 a la carte restaurants across the Estate. None of which can be rivalled for ambience and quality outside the Resort, the Chateau Bel Ombre, Gin’Ja and the C Beach Club excel in service, taste sensation and quality of ambience are our favourites.

The rooms and suites are beautifully appointed with a warm colonial style feel and the Spa, beach and pool areas are first class. One extra string to the Telfair bow is the Valriche Nature Park, up in the mountains above the Estate, which is so beautiful and here one can do nature trail treks and enjoy exceptional Quad Bike Trails through the rolling hills and forests. The new addition of an exclusive golf course to be named La Reserve by the end of 2021 close to this Nature Park will greatly enhance the Heritage Le Telfair Resort and secure its already long lasting legacy, as the best in the Indian Ocean.
